FALL 2017 - When Dreams Become Reality

If you follow us on Facebook, you know our biggest news lately has been the building of a new dining room. This plan has been in the works for over a year, ever since DIF told us that they would be closing down casa hogars in surrounding areas and wanted to start bringing us more children. We have beds for 50 children, but currently only have one great room that serves as our dining room, homework area, play room, TV room and entertaining space for large groups. Obviously we need more space if we are going to increase in number by 20-30 children!

The building project moved from an idea to reality on the first of October. A group from Washington state, led by former Sonshine Hacienda staff member Paul Korneliussen, arrived to begin demolition. A space that originally housed our laundry, and was later turned into a pantry, was gutted and the walls removed. Paul and his team, which included Don and Jay, also from Washington, did the important work of preparing the area, laying out a foundation and framing the walls that will hold our new room together.

After a week of work, the Washingtonians passed the (literal and proverbial) hammer off to a group from Colorado, which included Pastor Guy, Richard, Norman, and our dear friend Phil Varnak, who divides his time between Colorado and San Felipe. With the groundwork laid by the Washington group, progress became quickly visible as walls, a roof, windows and doors formed our new dining room within the week. Materials were a little short, however. The guys hated to leave with just a foot of roofing to go, but Phil and Sonshine Hacienda missionary Rand Ubry-Terrell promised to complete the work.

In the week to come, Phil and Rand not only finished the roof, but added in electric, plumbing and insulation. Phil recruited some members of his men’s group and they came to put up the drywall. A local contractor then came to put up sheetrock and lay tile.

We still have work to do, but we are thrilled by our progress and by the many hands that came together in love to work on this project alongside of us!
