Changes at Sonshine Hacienda

I don't think anyone likes change in their lives – at least I know I don't! But we have been through a number of major changes this past year.
A great deal of stress was placed on us by DIF, the government monitoring wing of the Casa Hogars (children’s homes) in Mexico. We have had to make weekly trips to Mexicali for meetings and write multiple manuals – binders full of procedures – in order to comply with new requirements. It has been a long process, but in spite of many challenges, we seem to have made progress. We are so thankful to Alvaro and Diana, our administrators, for their hard work in getting the initial procedure manuals completed, and for Mama Imelda for helping continue the work they started.
In June, Diana and Alvaro resigned their position as administrators at Sonshine Hacienda. It was so sad to see them leave us, but we also understand that they need to follow the Lord's will for their lives. We wish them well and will remain friends.
We are excited to share with all of our supporters that we are welcoming some dear old friends to the management team at Sonshine Hacienda: Imelda and Bernardo. They are joining us as administrators. They will work with us (Gary and Karen) as well as our new missionaries, Randy and Katie, who will be arriving in November. We have also added another individual to our staff who will help with accounting.
As if that weren’t enough change, we are prepared to grow in size at Sonshine Hacienda. We have been told that our Casa Hogar will be receiving considerably more children in the near future. So hang on tight, and get ready for an exciting time ahead!
We are thrilled about the new opportunities that are available and are incredibly grateful for your support through it all. God is in control, and in Him we place our trust. PRAISE THE LORD!

Introducing Randy & Katie Ubry-Terrell, Volunteer Missionaries

We have lots of exciting news to share with you about Sonshine Hacienda! We’ll go into more details in an upcoming newsletter, but briefly we will say that DIF wants to bring LOTS of new children to us in the very near future. And with more children, we need more hands on deck. Which is why we are so excited to introduce you to Randy and Katie Ubry-Terrell.

Hailing from Loomis, California, Randy and Katie first came to visit Sonshine Hacienda in February of this year, and by June could no longer deny that God was calling them to serve. We didn’t even know that we needed additional administrative staff at that point, but God knew!

Katie’s background is in communication, administration, and social media marketing. Randy is a professional chef with extensive experience in construction. And both bring a fresh energy and willingness to jump right in wherever needed.

Please join us in thanking God for taking care of our needs even before we had them! Pray for these two as they make the transition to San Felipe in early November. And we also invite you to support their ministry account now, so that once they are on site they can focus 100 percent of their energy on the children and the work that needs to be done here. We are all in this together! Praise God!

The 2016 Blues & Arts Festival

The annual Blues and Arts Festival was held on March 18thand 19th at El Dorado Ranch. It was a beautiful day, with many headliner groups returning to thrill the crowd who had come from near and far to hear their favorite Blues groups.

Thanks to Gary Dilley and theSan Felipe Lions Club, this years festival was well organized, including recruiting top name groups to the festival.

Gary Dilley stated that they begin organizing the next year's festival the day after the current one ends. He also stated that all the money made is given to local charities (such as Sonshine Hacienda) except for an amount set aside for the next years festival. Sonshine Hacienda received $5,000 dollars from the 2016 Blues & Arts Festival! What a blessing. We thank all the hard working Lions Club members who are all so generous with their time and energy.

Sonshine Hacienda is grateful to you for helping our children !

May 21st we stood speechless watching Alexandra walk the center aisle of our church arm-in-arm with Papa Gary. Her three sisters had preceded her. All four looked like precious angels. Alexa was in a purple, glass-beaded gown and her sisters wore matching tea length lilac dresses with glass beading. I could not help but think of the time when we first met these sisters.

It was on May 10, 2006. The bell rang. Standing in our doorway were four young sisters brought to us by "DIF," our version of "CPS." Adriana, the youngest, was only 4 years old, and Alexa was the oldest. They were so scared. They had never been outside of the city of Mexicali and had no idea where they were. But as time passed, the girls began to feel at home at Sonshine Hacienda. Since that first day, they have become great help to their Dorm Mothers. They are great examples for the other girls.

Early in 2016 we realized that Alexa would be the first candidate at Sonshine Hacienda for a Quincenera. Not familiar with a Quincenera? It is a formal celebration on the fifteenth birthday of a young woman. What does it celebrate? It celebrates the passing from childhood to womanhood and it is steeped in tradition, symbolism, and religious meaning.   (...continued in the column to the right)

Rotary International of San Felipe Baja CA/MX

Rotary Club of San Felipe is very active in our community helping in many ways to make life a little better for its residents.

The San Felipe Rotary Club recently adopted Sonshine Hacienda as one of its project to help with sustaining monthly support.  They kicked off this commitment with a generous check and are continuing to help our children monthly.  The old saying that “It takes a village to raise a child” is so true.

We could not continue to care for our children at Sonshine Hacienda if it were not for the generosity of the wonderful people of San Felipe and groups like San Felipe Rotary. We would like to thank all of the Rotary members in San Felipe and all of the members worldwide who do so much to help those in need.

Alexa's Night to Remember continued...

So when we met with Alexa, we discovered that she was very eager to have a Quincenera. So the planning began! And it really took a village to execute the plan.

Let me just say here that we owe a big debt of gratitude to so many friends, church members, and people from the States who helped to complete the task. You all know who you are! Alexa, Gary & I, as well as Diana & Alvaro want to thank you for all you have done to make this night so special for Alexa. God Bless each of you for your help.

In a nutshell, here's what happened. The evening began with a service at our church, which was decorated beautifully by an Event Planner that we hired. Afterward, we went from the church building to a Salon which was decorated in pink and purple colors. We had a delicious dinner, and afterward we had a tieredcake to enjoy along with a lovely dessert table. We then danced, listened to a Christian band, and visited with one another.

Alexa was presented with a photo album and other remembrances of her special night. If you come to Sonshine we are sure Alexa would love to show you her pictures and other memorabilia of her special evening.

On behalf of Alexa, thank you so much for making a difference in her life. God Bless each of you.

The Kids Had a Very Merry Christmas
by Karen Lewis

Chrismas was a smashing success.

It took a fantastic group of Santa's Elves working together to accomplish the task of providing a loving & memorable Christmas to 27 children at Sonshine Hacienda.

And Elves we had!

What I'm really saying is that it could not have been accomplished without the help of our wonderful church, Mission San Felipe.

For instance, Linda Ortiz headed up the “Christmas  Stocking” project. Each child was picked by a church member and they filled their stocking with goodies and little toys.

Then there was another team that was small but mighty. They wrapped all the presents for the children. This group worked like a well oiled machine. In just a couple of hours a mountain of presents were wrapped.

And finally there were all the gifts that were purchased by money that was donated for our children. I would like to say thank you to all the families that purchased gifts for our children and donated money. Your generosity humbled and blessed us.

In addition to individual families, we also had many of our supporting churches, local restaurants, the local Police Department, the local hospital, and a youth group from San Jose, CA, who gave gifts, money, or time to make the Sonshine Hacienda Christmas so special. Again I have to say that it is truly humbling to see how the Lord touches the hearts of others to provide an amazing Christmas for 27 children who otherwise would have not had any Christmas at all.

To all of you a great big thanks!

If you're ever in San Felipe eat at this wonderful Restaurant! Owned and operated by a real Italian!

Dr. Melina is a great dentist. Gary and Bob use her. If you're looking for a Mexican dentist, you've found her!

by Karen Lewis

For the past year we have been praying for some new washing machines. The machines we had purchased in the past were simply “beat up” due to the high volume of use that was required of our machines.

So we began sharing with our supporters our need. We were down to one decent machine and that was very difficult with wash to do for 27 children. As the word spread, good news began to arrive.

We received word from the Rotary Club in Rocklin, California: they would buy us a heavy duty washing machine, as well as a heavy duty dryer! Then soon after, we heard from the Lustigs, long time supporters of Sonshine Hacienda, who said they would purchase the second heavy duty Washing Machine!

What a big "Praise the Lord!" this is. Washing machines and dryers that work! They are such a wonderful gift.

Our dorm mothers and our housekeeper are so happy to see these new machines. We are going to have training classes on how to use the machines correctly before this newsletter hits your inbox!
